Don’t ever let anyone tell you new music sucks. Because what rings true from the past just as much as today, is that sometimes you gotta look for the good shit.
And there’s no greater example, then the Boojums, whose music grabs you by the throat, rips it open, and shoots a laser beam of euphoric punk glory into your gaping hole.
Too much?
I say not enough.
These Nova Scotian rockers are tearing things up online and on the Canadian punk scene with their perfect blend of fuzzy guitars, VHS home video music videos, and catchy ass chorus’s.
Featuring Willie Stratton on guitar and vocals, Sarah Johnston on bass, and Patrick Murphy on drums, these guys deliver the garage rock goods, and are another in a long list of great new artists to come out of the East Coast in the last five years (for others, check out Waylon Napadogan — country music — and Alexander Gallant — moody, stare out at the ocean and pine for the one that got away type music).
But where do you start with this band?
Easy.
Kick it off with, “Meet Me in the Middle”. The intro is face slapping goodness.
Then for an appetizer, mix in “Outta My Head”, and I dare you, nay, FULL ON CHALLENGE YOU to not head bang to this wonderfully ear pleasing jam.
Damn, I love this band.
Where else can you see a former school teacher hop around with an eight string bass while a man croons out with a voice that’s got a mixture of Danzig’s guttural power and Bowie’s wonderful weirdness?
They’ve rocked everywhere from Kelowna to an exhibition show for The Clash’s Mick Jones at his Rock & Roll Public Library.
Their most recent self titled album, was recorded out of their house — presumably because no studio could contain the sonic power of this band — and was released by Having Fun Records – a Toronto label that champions indie rock type stuff.
